Subsurface Study and Remediation of Gasoline Product in Bedrock
During subsurface investigations, ERA discovered floating gasoline product up to 12 feet thick in bedrock within a city block-sized area occupied by service stations since the early 1920's. Working with regulators, ERA directed the excavation of 5,100 tons of contaminated soil for offsite recycling. ERA designed and provided construction observation services for a series of pumping wells with interconnecting underground piping to recover product located 25 feet below grade. All work had to be designed and coordinated with the simultaneous construction of a new franchised service station over the contaminated areas to avoid delays. The recovery system has successfully reduced the product thickness from the original 12 feet to zero with no impact on the new station and neighbors.
